“I am relieved” says a mother after her baby girl receives polio vaccines in UNRWA clinic [Original post] “I am relieved” says a mother in #Gaza after her baby girl receives the two drops of vaccines in @UNRWA clinic. 1st phase of the #polio campaign kicks off in the middle areas. This is a race against time to reach just over 600,000 children across the Gaza Strip in the coming days. For this to work, parties to the conflict must respect the temporary area pauses. For the sake of children across the region a lasting ceasefire is overdue. It can cause difficulty breathing and irreversible paralysis, usually in the legs. It strikes young children in particular and is sometimes fatal. Health crisis: Diseases like polio, hepatitis A, meningitis, and impetigo are spreading due to poor hygiene and destroyed infrastructure, with hospitals overwhelmed and many deaths reported, especially among children. Lack of hygiene supplies : Basic supplies like soap are unavailable for months, contributing to widespread illness. Humanitarian organizations struggle to provide essentials due to movement restrictions and limited aid deliveries. Chronology June 19 : Gaza’s Ministry of Health said it had detected “component poliovirus type 2” in coordination with UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency June 21 : The Israeli army begins to vaccinate against polio all soldiers operating in Gaza or due to enter there soon , after a high concentration of the virus was found in sewage in Gaza. source End of July : The World Health Organization is “extremely worried” about the possibility of an outbreak of the highly infectious polio virus in Gaza after traces were found in wastewater. Immunisation rates in Gaza and the occupied West Bank were optimal before the conflict. Polio vaccine coverage was estimated at 99% in 2022, although it had declined to 89% last year, according to the latest data. the “decimation” of Gaza health system" - with only 16 out of the territory's 36 hospitals partially functional - as well as the "lack of security, access obstruction, constant population displacement, shortages of medical supplies, poor quality of water and weakened sanitation" have contributed to reduce immunisation rates and increase the risk of diseases spreading. First case at the end of July : According to the WHO, a 10-month-old baby had been paralysed by the type-2 strand of the virus - the first case in Gaza in 25 years. Augustus 29 : Israel and Hamas have agreed to brief ceasefires in parts of Gaza to allow the safe distribution of the polio vaccine, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These pauses will begin Sunday and occur in three phases: central Gaza first, then the south, and finally the north. Each pause will last three days, from 6am to 3pm, and may extend to a fourth day if necessary. Vaccination Campaign planning The WHO and partners are launching a campaign to vaccinate 640,000 children in Gaza against polio, despite the ongoing war and damaged healthcare system. Timeline by Phased Approach : A three-day campaign will start Sunday in central Gaza during a "humanitarian pause" from 6am to 3pm, with potential extensions. It will later move to southern and northern Gaza during similar pauses. Campaign Duration and Goals : The campaign will last three days in each zone, with a potential fourth day if needed. The goal is to vaccinate over 640,000 children under 10 across Gaza in two rounds, with the second dose administered in four weeks. Vaccination Sites : Around 160 sites, including medical centers, hospitals, and schools, are designated for vaccinations, mainly in Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah. Challenges : Significant obstacles include damaged infrastructure—65% of roads are affected and 19 of 36 hospitals are out of service. Security concerns have also halted aid group movements. The campaign is described as a "massive effort" involving thousands of workers, with significant planning and preparation. Health Worker Involvement : Over 2,180 health and community outreach workers are involved, working through 392 fixed points and almost 300 mobile teams. September 8 Director of field hospitals in Gaza Strip, Dr. Marwan Al-Hamas : The Ministry of Health decides to extend the polio vaccination campaign for an additional day in order to reach the largest number of children under the age of ten. source Progress of Emergency Polio Vaccination Campaign: Phase I: The campaign began on 1 September in central Gaza, reaching nearly 87,000 children on the first day Humanitarian Pauses : Area-specific pauses in fighting have allowed the vaccination efforts to proceed. These pauses are critical for ensuring safe access to health facilities for children and outreach workers. It was already broken in several places. Some incidents happens in Central Gaza Strip during the first days of the campaign. source Following the completion of the first phase of the polio vaccination campaign yesterday, conducted in areas with temporary ceasefire pauses, Palestinians are questioning when the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip will end. The convoy had both national & international staff traveling to roll out the #polio vaccination campaign for children in Gaza city and northern Gaza. The convoy was stopped at gun point just after the Wadi Gaza checkpoint with threats to detain UN staff. Heavy damage was caused by bulldozers to the UN armoured vehicles. All staff & convoy are now released & back safely in the UN base. We are not able to confirm whether the polio campaign will take place tomorrow, (Tuesday) in northern Gaza. This significant incident is the latest in a series of violations against UN staff including shootings at convoys & arrests by the Israeli Armed Forces at checkpoints despite prior notification. UN Staff must be allowed to undertake their duties in safety + be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law. Gaza is no different." Source Dr. Munir Al-Barash, Director General of the Ministry of Health : The occupation is obstructing the entry of the convoy of medicines and polio vaccinations, which leads to the failure to start the vaccination campaign in northern Gaza. Source Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor : The occupation army’s arrest of a UN mission yesterday and interrogation of its members as they moved from the southern Gaza Strip to the north clearly demonstrates its intention to disrupt humanitarian and relief efforts. Cynical context of this humanitarian campaign Gazans feel like they are part of a "dark game," constantly moving to avoid bombings while still facing risks. Pauses for polio vaccination are set in specific areas, with both stationary and mobile points available for people to get the vaccine, but accessing them is very difficult. There is skepticism among medical staff about the success of the vaccination campaign, with some believing Israel is using it as a smokescreen to claim it allows humanitarian aid, while larger issues remain unaddressed. Humanitarian aid is barely reaching Gaza, with significantly diminished levels of assistance and a growing number of people in need. Aid organizations face numerous obstacles, such as not being allowed to move essential supplies (e.g., vegetables, hygiene kits) between different parts of Gaza despite severe shortages. Conditions in Gaza are described as inhumane, with people barely surviving. "Now, in the north of Gaza, there is no vegetables on the commercial market, but, ironically, hygiene kits are getting in to the north. What we are not permitted to do is move vegetables from the south to the north, where they’re needed, or hygiene kits from the north to the south. And this is just one sort of example of the various different hurdles and obstacles that are deliberately being placed (by Israel) in our way." Arwa Damon, an American journalist and humanitarian who covered the Middle East and other regions. Source More than 400 Palestinians were killed and at least 900 were wounded during the 12 days of the vaccination campaign, according to figures by Palestinian health authorities. End of the first round of vaccination (initial dose of the oral vaccine) Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s chief, says the first round of the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza reached 90 percent coverage.* “Our next challenge is to provide children with their second dose at the end of September”* Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X, renewing his call for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave. My father said we'd return in 2 weeks. It's been 76 years [Original post] In less than half a minute, the story of Palestinian Dhiab Saeed Ahmed, displaced from Beit Mahsir, answers many questions: Did the conflict start on October 7? Why shouldn’t we trust the evacuation orders issued by the occupation army? 🎥 Maydan Alquds [Tags: Palestine Voices, Forced Displacement, Property] [Found by: Khaled Yousry, @maydanalquds] [Location: West Bank > Bayt Mahsir] [Archivist Notes] Bayt Mahsir (Arabic: بيت محسير) was a Palestinian Arab village in the Jerusalem Subdistrict. It was depopulated during the Nakba on May, 1948 by the Harel Brigade in Operation Makkabi. It was located 9 km west of Jerusalem. In 1945, the village had a population of 2,400. Bayt Mahsir had three schools; two schools for boys and an elementary school for girls. Bayt Mahsir contains a number of khirbat, including al-Huwaytiyya, al-Masi, Khatula and al-Sallam. According to the Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi, the village remaining structures on the village land are: "Several village houses have been spared, and are for the most part interspersed among the houses of the settlement of Beit Meir. Two large, rectangular-shaped, almost identical houses built of limestone rise above the Israeli settlement's cabin-like residences. The remains of a flour mill, a metal machine with flywheels fitted over a stone structure, can still be seen. There is a wild forest of old trees on the eastern edge of the village site, on top of the mountain. The tomb of al-' Ajami, together with other graves, are among the trees." Source

According to her father, Lujain was shot through the forehead as she opened a curtain in her home. She had no involvement in any violent activity. Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said its crews transported a 16-year-old girl who was fatally shot by Israeli forces’ live bullets in the village of Kafr. Israeli forces prevented ambulance crews’ access to the site for over half an hour and left the girl to bleed to death. Another youth was also injured in the thigh by the Israeli forces’ live fire : Mohammad Abdullah Mohammad Kanaan, 14, was shot and killed by an Israeli sniper around 4:40 a.m in Tulkram entrance Camp. Context of "Operation Summer Camp" "Operation Summer Camp" is a large-scale military incursion launched by Israeli forces on August 28, 2024, involving hundreds of soldiers and armored vehicles. It targeted towns and refugee camps in the northern occupied West Bank, including Jenin and Tulkarem. The operation i s described as one of the most severe incursions since the Gaza war began a year ago. It has led to the deaths of over 30 Palestinians, including civilians, children, and elderly people. Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub described the operation as extremely oppressive, with 4,000-5,000 people displaced from their homes in Jenin and nearby refugee camps. The incursion has caused severe shortages of food and water, and aid deliveries have been delayed due to arbitrary controls imposed by Israeli forces. During the military operations, Israeli forces have taken control of Palestinian homes to use as military bases, often stationing snipers on rooftops. Bulldozers destroyed vital civil infrastructure, including water networks, leading to power outages in many neighborhoods around Jenin. Israeli forces also surrounded hospitals and obstructed ambulance movement, delaying critical medical assistance to those injured. Events Leading to Lujain’s murder On September 2, 2024, Israeli forces entered Kafr Dan, northwest of Jenin, prompting confrontations with Palestinian fighters. The soldiers surrounded a neighboring house in an attempt to apprehend a wanted Palestinian man. At approximately 2:10 p.m., Lujain, who was inside her home, 50 meters from the besieged house, was shot by an Israeli sniper. Israeli forces blocked an ambulance from accessing Lujain’s home for about 10 minutes. She was later pronounced dead at Jenin Governmental Hospital. **Folowing Defense for Children International Palestine Lujain is the third Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank in 2024, according to DCIP (Defense for Children International Palestine). In total, 75 Palestinian children have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank in 2024, including two U.S. citizens. Since the October 7, 2024 escalation in Gaza, 156 Palestinian children have been killed in West Bank. In 2023 alone, 121 Palestinian children were killed by Israeli forces and settlers, most by live ammunition. Other children were killed by drone strikes and missile attacks. Lethal Force Against Civilians Under international law, intentional lethal force is only justified when there is a direct threat to life. However, evidence collected by DCIP indicates that Israeli forces often use lethal force in ways that suggest extrajudicial or willful killings. Since the Gaza war began, more than 680 Palestinians, both civilians and fighters, have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israeli Military Response: The Israeli military claimed they were investigating the incident, alleging that they fired back at a suspect who had been observing them. This statement came amidst a broader military operation, but Lujain’s death raises concerns about the rules of engagement used by Israeli forces in occupied territories. Criticism from international human rights organizations: While the Israeli military claims to investigate these killings, the ongoing pattern of violence, especially against minors, has drawn significant criticism from international human rights organizations. Vaccinating the children before bombing them [Original post] Drops of the polio vaccine in children's mouths, and rockets on their heads. [Tags: Hospitals, Water, Palestine Voices, Blocking Aid, Local Governance, Sanitation, Water, Epidemic, Infrastructure, Healthcare System] [Found by: Mohammed Asad] [Location: Gaza > Deir al-Balah > North Gaza > Southern Gaza > Central Gaza] [Archivist Notes] Context Polio is highly contagious and transmits mainly through contact with contaminated feces, water or food. " Right now, you are vaccinating our children against polio, a simple virus. But every day they are killing them. In just a few hours, the truce will end, and the shelling and killing of children will resume" Huda Al-Sheikh: A mother from Gaza from Telegram: QudsNEN Phase II : There is difficulty in transporting the vaccine because there is no fuel. " A medical worker speaks to Quds Feed about the process of vaccinating children in the southern Gaza Strip" Source Phase III : Islam Bader is reporting here that the campaign was supposed to start on Monday in North Gaza but people have been informed that it'll be delayed until Tuesday because the vaccines have not entered yet (thanks IDF) and that medical delegations are being completely blocked from entering. starting 4:03 in the following Source Falafel stall massacre ▪ On September 10, in the Morning, the Israeli army bombed a popular food “basta” in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, killing 6 and injured several Palestinians, in the east of Gaza City is only a few dozen or hundreds of meters from the “Asaad Al-Saftawi”, “Jaffa” and “Al-Tuffah” schools, which have been identified as safe vaccination centers in the Al-Tuffah and Al-Daraj neighborhoods. Following Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, by this attack, “Israel seriously undermines polio vaccination campaign in Gaza". Incident at the North Gaza border On September 9 at 8:00 PM , the Israeli army stopped a UN and WHO convoy in northern Gaza, loaded with medicine and fuel, as it entered the Gaza Strip to interrogate Palestinian "suspects." Source Rumours are spreading simultaneously on X on all Zionist accounts , alleging that the Israeli army stopped a UN car participating in the anti-polio campaign because an activist/terrorist was among them. UN statement around 9:00 PM: "We are aware of an incident involving UN personnel and vehicles in northern Gaza, and the priority is the safety of our personnel."** Source UNRWA statement (Philippe Lazzarini) around "The Israeli Army stopped a UN convoy on its way to northern #Gaza for more than eight hours today (Monday) despite prior detailed coordination. This operation, reported by Israeli media, involves thousands of soldiers and is expected to last for days. The IDF operation, which is reportedly named Operation Summer Camps , is pretending coming in response to Israeli concern about a growing threat to their security from the occupied territories amid the war against Hamas and clashes with Hezbollah in the north. But comes as a continuation of the far-right government's desire to carry out a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Key Events: • August 28 Night Attack: The Israeli army initiated the assault with massive troops, including air support. They are reportedly on the verge of invading a central hospital in Jenin. • Foreign Minister's Statement: Early this morning, Israel’s Foreign Minister tweeted about the need to displace Palestinians from areas in the West Bank. • Evacuation and Destruction: Evacuation orders have been issued to Palestinian communities in refugee camps across the region. Full-scale destruction and the cutting of water supply are already underway. • Media Coverage: Israeli media has provided minimal coverage of the offensive, despite its scale. Intent to destroy living conditions, ethnical cleansing evidences : • Ambulance Stations Under Siege: The ambulance station in Al-Far’a camp in the West Bank is under siege by Israeli forces. Paramedics have been forcibly removed and lined up against the wall, preventing them from performing their duties. • Siege on Hospitals: The IDF is imposing a siege on Jenin Hospital, Al-Israa Specialized Hospital and Thabet Hospital : Israeli military vehicles have surrounded, obstructing ambulances and cutting off essential medical aid, according to the Wafa news agency. • Blockades and Water Cuts and electricity in Tulkarem and Jenin cutting water pipes in Tulkarem, • Settlers invade the Al Aqsa compound. This constitutes a full-scale assault on Palestinian lives and sacred sites. • Ongoing Arrests and Field Investigations: The IDF has launched a campaign of arrests and field investigations since the morning in the towns of Aroura, Beit Rima, Kafr Ain, and Qarawat Bani Zeid in the Ramallah district. • Destruction of Refugee Camps: The military, accompanied by bulldozers, is destroying and besieging refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. • Raids in Jerusalem: Israeli police are raiding Anata and Shu'afat refugee camps in occupied Jerusalem, deploying tear gas and arresting several people. • Casualties: The death toll has risen to 10 people, with dozens more injured. Due to the ongoing siege on hospitals and the broader assault, the exact number of arrests remains unknown

Infant Abdulrahman Abu Al-Jadayyan: first case of polio [Original post] Abdulrahman Abu Al-Jadayyan is the first case of polio detected in the Gaza Strip. [Tags: Hospitals, Water, Blocking Aid, Local Governance, Sanitation, Water, Epidemic, Infrastructure, Children, Healthcare System, Appeals] [Found by: Eye on Palestine, @mahdy_zourob] [Location: Gaza > North Gaza > Southern Gaza > Central Gaza] [Archivist Notes] Context Polio is highly contagious and transmits mainly through contact with contaminated feces, water or food.
