Documentation about the olive harvest season in Burin [Original post] This olive harvest season, we had the great opportunity to document both the struggle and the resistance Palestinians living in Burin experience at the hands of fascist settlers. Check out the preview and stay tuned for the world premiere #Burin #Nablus #WestBank [Tags: Nature, Looting, Settlement, Soldiers and Settlers, Baton, Agriculture, Living conditions, Impunity, Property, Land theft, Apartheid] [Found by: @anna_lippman] [Location: West Bank > Burin] [Archivist Notes] Since the beginning of October, and the olive harvest season in Palestine, attacks against Palestinian farmers have increased. Attacks and assaults against farmers are daily occurrences in the occupied West Bank and the vast majority target farms in the governorates of Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarem, Qalqiliya and Salfit. Olive trees are estimated to account for a third of cultivated land in Palestine and contribute up to 20% of the agricultural output. The current olive harvest season is especially important for the Palestinians given the economic hardship caused by the war. Settlers have already used violence against harvesters, and many fear that the army won't provide adequate protection and will prevent them from accessing their lands. Throughout this olive season, Israel's Settler/Soldier militias have been diligently preventing farmers access to their lands, shooting/killing farmers, terror attacks, burning of homes & property, destruction of olive trees, theft of olive harvest. In most cases, Palestinians were in their lands harvesting olives, in areas which even Israel's "judicial & military authorities" "permitted" Palestinian farmers access to. However, Israeli settlers & soldiers coordinated to remove Palestinians from their lands, often by force. In some cases, like Sisiya on October 18, the settlers violently attack Palestinian farmers before the Israeli soldiers intervene to expel the farmers. In Susiya, the farmers had a fresh "Israeli court order" permitting them access - to no avail. In other cases, the Settler/Soldiers terrorists simply shoot & kill Palestinian farmers, such as in the case of Hanan Abu Salameh on October 17, a 59-year-old woman who was killed while harvesting olives in Faqqua near Jenin by a soldier who fired about 10 shots at her. West Bank olive harvest met with rising Israeli violence, says UN . Nine deaths in a week, including soldier’s killing of 59-year-old woman as she farmed, brings charges of ‘war-like’ tactics. The settlers attack, burn, and destroy. The soldiers attack and issue "military closed zones." In tandem. They work in close cooperation to prevent Palestinian farmers access to their olive harvest, imposing a new reality on the ground. Another new phenomena across the West Bank, is that Israeli settlers now felt comfortable to steal the Palestinian olive harvest after succeeding to expel Palestinians off their lands through the use of force. Sometimes, after they steal, they burn or destroy the olive trees. This is an overlooked reality in the occupied West Bank. And the settlers are celebrating this achievement, calling for donations and supporters, hoping to expand the new reality on the ground. This has been one of the most violent Olive Harvest season. Every day, Palestinian farmers were violently prevented from reaching the olive groves, or threatened and attacked inside their villages as warning. Source Chronology (ongoing) On November 28 in Salem Village, the Israeli forces obstructed Palestinian farmers' access to their lands in Salem, east of Nablus, preventing them from harvesting olives. Soldiers detained individuals, checked IDs, and used sound bombs and tear gas against youths. They also set up an iron gate at the northern entrance and placed soil berms to block vehicles. On November 25 Palestinian families are prevented from harvesting olives from their groves by Israeli colonial forces in the area of Sahel Turmus-Aya. Before being kicked out of their lands, farmers noticed that their olive trees bore very little fruit. Throughout this past year, the landowners were prevented from accessing their land at the hands of settlers and soldiers, thus making it impossible to tend to their trees properly. The soldiers also attacked a youngster. (according to Activestills On November 9 Ahmad Abdullah Ghazal from the town of Sebastia, northwest of Nablus has passed away days after settlers attacked him and sprayed him with gas while he was picking olives. He did not suffer from any illness prior to this incident. On November 8 The guard of Yitzhar settlement, along with settlers dressed in Israeli occupation forces uniforms, expelled farmers and stole olives from the lands of Burin village, south of Nablus. Landowners returned to their orchards in Umm Nir to continue the olive harvest that had been interrupted the day before. This time, Shmuel Lusky and another settler from the illegal outpost of Ancient Susya arrived at the scene, attempting to steal the harvested olives and assaulting the harvesters. On November 7 dozens of soldiers and police officers from the Border Police prevent harvesting in olive groves, in Um Nir, near Susya, Masafer Yatta. On November 4 in Burqa, Settlers invaded a Palestinian land to burn their olive trees. Two farmers defend their land by throwing stones on the settlers who are lightly wounded. On November 2 Under the protection of Israeli forces, settlers attacked farmers while they were picking olives in Qaryut village, south of Nablus. On October 30 Israeli settlers chopped off hundreds of olive trees in Qaryut near Nablus. On October 28 Israeli settlers storm agricultural lands near Ramallah and set fire to olive trees. On October 27 In the morning - a Palestinian's car is burned while picking olives near the town of Kablan, southeast of Nablus. In the evening - in the square at the entrance to Huwara, same governorate, soldiers or settlers, raided the area. On October 26 In Hebron / Al-Khalil, Israeli Jewish settlers attacked a Palestinian family during the olives harvest in Hebron, stoling the olives & sheets which the family use to pick the olive. On October 25 Beit Jala area, Israeli army prevents Palestinians from harvesting olives on private land, using stun grenades at close range against activists assisting with the harvest. EU and allied diplomatic officials joined Palestinian youth in olive harvesting at Kufr Nimeh to show solidarity amid rising settler attacks. Since October 1st, settlers have reportedly vandalized, burned, or cut down about 600 olive trees in 15 West Bank communities. UNOCHA recorded 51 settler-related incidents affecting 57 communities. EU Statement : The EU urged Israel to protect Palestinian farmers and ensure a safe harvest, stressing that perpetrators of violence, harassment, and intimidation should be held accountable. On October 22 A large groups of settlers carried out a progrom against the residents of Jalud, a village near Nablus . They set fire to homes, vandalized vehicles, killed livestock, and and physically assaulted villagers. 2 Palestinians were injured in the face and another suffered a skull fracture during the attack. Sheep were slaughtered On october 20 In Burqa , near Ramallah, soldiers prevented the olive harvest by using stun grenades and making threats. As the soldiers attempted to evict the locals, masked settlers armed with batons approached. On October 18 Settlers open fire and launch tear gas at residents and volunteers harvesting olives in Kafr al-Labad , east of Tulkarm A settler attack on the residents in Susiya village, Masafer Yatta , one solidarity activist was injured. Since the start of the Olive Harvest, attacks have been non-stop and increasing, while soldiers watch and protect the settlers and facilitate the attacks. In the middle of the night settlers snuck into olive groves in Burin , near Nablus, and stole their equipment. An armed Israeli settler in IDF uniform threatens Palestinians after storming their land during olive picking in the village of Ramin , Tulkarm, West Bank. On october 17 : Hanan Abdel Rahman Abu Salama, 59, was killed by Israeli fire as she was picking olives near the security barrier in the West Bank village of Faqoua near Jenin , on October 17, 2024. The Israel Defense Forces has suspended a deputy commander in its 334th Battalion and opened an investigation. Faqoua village councilor Munir Barakat told AFP that “an Israeli in military clothing arrived at the place in a white car and fired about 10 bullets at the Abu Salama family, who were picking olives on their land". Local sources reported that the colonists attacked citizens while they were attending their lands and picking olives in the village of Rojib , sprayed them with pepper gas, and forced them to leave. In a related context, an Israeli colonist also attacked a citizen while he was picking olives in the village of Madama, south of Nablus , preventing him from completing his work, and forcing him to leave his land. Qusra , Israeli settlers further forced citizens to leave the olive fields, and seized a vehicle used to transport them and transport the olives after the harvest. On October 13 : Burin just outside Nablus, teenage settlers are beating olive trees and stealing crops from Palestinians. On october 12 Settlers set the village of Al-Mughayyir , north of Ramallah on fire to burn down agricultural crops and olive trees. Armed settlers assault farmers and block them from harvesting olives; Settler militias assault farmers during olive harvesting in Turmus Ayya , north of Ramallah On October 5: in Al-Luban al-Gharbiyya (اللبّن الغربيّة), Ramallah district - Al-Bira, occupied West Bank, Hasem Salama and his family were attacked by over 50 masked and armed Israeli settlers while harvesting olives. 11 Palestinians were injured, including women and a 7-year-old child. The settlers used iron pipes, causing bone fractures and severe injuries; Salama himself suffered leg wounds and was unable to stand. On September 28 : Armed settlers raided our land in Tuwani, Masafer Yatta, deliberately destroying olive crop using a herd of sheep, under protection of armed settler soldiers. They detained farmers for an hour while the settlers sabotaged the olive grove. On September 12 : Settlers from the Rehelim area set fire to olive trees and agricultural equipment in the village of Yatma. The fires are still burning. UN Experts on Israeli Settler Violence Against Palestinian Farmers On 17 October 2024, UN experts highlighted the severe challenges Palestinian farmers face during the olive harvest season in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Intimidation and Violence: Israeli settlers and occupation forces have escalated their attacks, severely harassing Palestinian farmers, restricting access to land, and threatening food sovereignty. 2023 saw the highest levels of violence, including physical assaults, property damage, and obstruction of access to farming areas. Many Palestinians were forced to leave their homes and lands. Economic Impact: Due to Israeli restrictions, 96,000 dunums of olive-cultivated land remained unharvested in 2023, causing a loss of 1,200 metric tons of olive oil, valued at approximately $10 million. Cultural and Ancestral Significance: The olive harvest is central to Palestinian culture and heritage. UN experts view Israel’s actions, including the destruction of orchards and water source restrictions, as attempts to expand illegal settlements. The annual olive harvest is a vital economic, social & cultural event for Palestinians 🫒 It's why Irish and UE partners are joining local harvests across the West Bank as a protective presence against a rise in settler violence, vandalism & intimidation, as documented by @OCHAOPT since Oct 1st. The Yesh Din organization reports that settlers have attacked laborers, stolen olives, and destroyed trees across the northern West Bank. Despite agreements with the Israeli military for protection, attacks continued, particularly in areas like Mughayyir and Burin. In total, Yesh Din recorded 36 violent incidents since October 3, with 24 of them preventing olive harvesting, even on lands without IDF-imposed access restrictions. In some cases, IDF soldiers and police were present but did not intervene; in others, they allegedly assisted settlers in driving laborers off the land. Palestinian farmers are only granted access to their lands twice a year, and no coordination for the 2024 harvest has been finalized. The IDF claims to be providing protection amidst increased security risks. According to Yesh Din, the 2024 olive harvest in the West Bank was marked by severe disruptions and violence against Palestinian farmers. Violence and Obstruction by Settlers and Security Forces The harvest, beginning on October 15, was marred by assaults and expulsions of farmers by settlers and Israeli security forces. In Faqqu’a (Jenin District), soldiers shot and killed 59-year-old Hanan ‘Abd a-Rahman Abu Salameh. Soldiers, Border Police, and settlement Civilian Security Coordinators (CSCs) frequently prevented Palestinians from accessing their lands or failed to intervene against settler violence. Military closure orders barred Palestinians from large agricultural areas, blocking access to their own lands. Failures of the Coordination Mechanism: The army’s “coordination mechanism,” meant to ensure safe harvests, was poorly implemented. Coordination notices were often given last minute, with farmers receiving only 1–2 days for harvesting, making it impossible to prepare or complete their work. Settlers exploited these restrictions, accessing and harvesting Palestinian lands freely, often stealing crops with soldiers present and inactive. Violent Incidents and Crop Theft: Between October 1 and November 15, 2024, Yesh Din documented 113 incidents of violence, harassment, or crop damage on lands from 51 Palestinian communities: 68 incidents: Settlers and soldiers forcibly prevented harvesting. In 70% of cases, state-armed personnel aided settlers or failed to protect farmers. 43 incidents: Physical violence against harvesters, including beatings and live fire, resulting in one fatality. 52 incidents: Theft or destruction of Palestinian property, including olive crop theft on 38 occasions. 12 incidents: Deliberate damage to olive trees, with hundreds of trees cut, sawed, or burned. International Legal Obligations: UN experts reaffirmed Israel’s legal duty to end the occupation and dismantle settlements as directed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on 19 July 2024, supported by the General Assembly on 18 September 2024. Provide reparations for human rights violations, return confiscated land, and allow displaced Palestinians to return. Call for International Protection: UN experts urge for protective measures, including a foreign presence to act as a buffer between Palestinian farmers and settlers. The Special Rapporteur on the right to food will present a report emphasizing Palestinian food sovereignty at the General Assembly on 18 October 2024. [Original post] Dr Mubashir explains why #polio is now a real concern in #gaza. #PermanentCeaseFireNOW is needed to stop the spread and to curb the thousands more deaths that will follow due to disease, malnutrition and poor sanitation. [Tags: Hospitals, Water, Humanitarian Aid, Blocking Aid, Local Governance, Sanitation, Water, Living conditions, Epidemic, Infrastructure, Doctors & Volunteers, Healthcare System] [Found by: @healthW4pal] [Location: Gaza > North Gaza > Southern Gaza > Central Gaza] [Archivist Notes] Context Polio is highly contagious and transmits mainly through contact with contaminated feces, water or food. It can cause difficulty breathing and irreversible paralysis, usually in the legs. It strikes young children in particular and is sometimes fatal. Health crisis: Diseases like polio, hepatitis A, meningitis, and impetigo are spreading due to poor hygiene and destroyed infrastructure, with hospitals overwhelmed and many deaths reported, especially among children. Lack of hygiene supplies : Basic supplies like soap are unavailable for months, contributing to widespread illness. Humanitarian organizations struggle to provide essentials due to movement restrictions and limited aid deliveries. Chronology June 19 : Gaza’s Ministry of Health said it had detected “component poliovirus type 2” in coordination with UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency June 21 : The Israeli army begins to vaccinate against polio all soldiers operating in Gaza or due to enter there soon , after a high concentration of the virus was found in sewage in Gaza. source End of July : The World Health Organization is “extremely worried” about the possibility of an outbreak of the highly infectious polio virus in Gaza after traces were found in wastewater. Immunisation rates in Gaza and the occupied West Bank were optimal before the conflict. Polio vaccine coverage was estimated at 99% in 2022, although it had declined to 89% last year, according to the latest data. the “decimation” of Gaza health system" - with only 16 out of the territory's 36 hospitals partially functional - as well as the "lack of security, access obstruction, constant population displacement, shortages of medical supplies, poor quality of water and weakened sanitation" have contributed to reduce immunisation rates and increase the risk of diseases spreading. First case at the end of July : According to the WHO, a 10-month-old baby had been paralysed by the type-2 strand of the virus - the first case in Gaza in 25 years. Augustus 29 : Israel and Hamas have agreed to brief ceasefires in parts of Gaza to allow the safe distribution of the polio vaccine, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These pauses will begin Sunday and occur in three phases: central Gaza first, then the south, and finally the north. Each pause will last three days, from 6am to 3pm, and may extend to a fourth day if necessary. Vaccination Campaign planning The WHO and partners are launching a campaign to vaccinate 640,000 children in Gaza against polio, despite the ongoing war and damaged healthcare system. Timeline by Phased Approach : A three-day campaign will start Sunday in central Gaza during a "humanitarian pause" from 6am to 3pm, with potential extensions. It will later move to southern and northern Gaza during similar pauses. Campaign Duration and Goals : The campaign will last three days in each zone, with a potential fourth day if needed. The goal is to vaccinate over 640,000 children under 10 across Gaza in two rounds, with the second dose administered in four weeks. Vaccination Sites : Around 160 sites, including medical centers, hospitals, and schools, are designated for vaccinations, mainly in Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah. Challenges : Significant obstacles include damaged infrastructure—65% of roads are affected and 19 of 36 hospitals are out of service. Security concerns have also halted aid group movements. The campaign is described as a "massive effort" involving thousands of workers, with significant planning and preparation. Health Worker Involvement : Over 2,180 health and community outreach workers are involved, working through 392 fixed points and almost 300 mobile teams. September 8 Director of field hospitals in Gaza Strip, Dr. Marwan Al-Hamas : The Ministry of Health decides to extend the polio vaccination campaign for an additional day in order to reach the largest number of children under the age of ten. source Progress of Emergency Polio Vaccination Campaign: Phase I: The campaign began on 1 September in central Gaza, reaching nearly 87,000 children on the first day Humanitarian Pauses : Area-specific pauses in fighting have allowed the vaccination efforts to proceed. These pauses are critical for ensuring safe access to health facilities for children and outreach workers. It was already broken in several places. Some incidents happens in Central Gaza Strip during the first days of the campaign. source Following the completion of the first phase of the polio vaccination campaign yesterday, conducted in areas with temporary ceasefire pauses, Palestinians are questioning when the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip will end. " Right now, you are vaccinating our children against polio, a simple virus. But every day they are killing them. In just a few hours, the truce will end, and the shelling and killing of children will resume" Huda Al-Sheikh: A mother from Gaza from Telegram: QudsNEN Phase II : There is difficulty in transporting the vaccine because there is no fuel. " A medical worker speaks to Quds Feed about the process of vaccinating children in the southern Gaza Strip" Source Phase III : Islam Bader is reporting here that the campaign was supposed to start on Monday in North Gaza but people have been informed that it'll be delayed until Tuesday because the vaccines have not entered yet (thanks IDF) and that medical delegations are being completely blocked from entering. starting 4:03 in the following Source Falafel stall massacre ▪ On September 10, in the Morning, the Israeli army bombed a popular food “basta” in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, killing 6 and injured several Palestinians, in the east of Gaza City is only a few dozen or hundreds of meters from the “Asaad Al-Saftawi”, “Jaffa” and “Al-Tuffah” schools, which have been identified as safe vaccination centers in the Al-Tuffah and Al-Daraj neighborhoods. Following Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, by this attack, “Israel seriously undermines polio vaccination campaign in Gaza". Incident at the North Gaza border On September 9 at 8:00 PM , the Israeli army stopped a UN and WHO convoy in northern Gaza, loaded with medicine and fuel, as it entered the Gaza Strip to interrogate Palestinian "suspects." Source Rumours are spreading simultaneously on X on all Zionist accounts , alleging that the Israeli army stopped a UN car participating in the anti-polio campaign because an activist/terrorist was among them. UN statement around 9:00 PM: "We are aware of an incident involving UN personnel and vehicles in northern Gaza, and the priority is the safety of our personnel."** Source UNRWA statement (Philippe Lazzarini) around "The Israeli Army stopped a UN convoy on its way to northern #Gaza for more than eight hours today (Monday) despite prior detailed coordination. The convoy had both national & international staff traveling to roll out the #polio vaccination campaign for children in Gaza city and northern Gaza. The convoy was stopped at gun point just after the Wadi Gaza checkpoint with threats to detain UN staff. Heavy damage was caused by bulldozers to the UN armoured vehicles. All staff & convoy are now released & back safely in the UN base. We are not able to confirm whether the polio campaign will take place tomorrow, (Tuesday) in northern Gaza. This significant incident is the latest in a series of violations against UN staff including shootings at convoys & arrests by the Israeli Armed Forces at checkpoints despite prior notification. UN Staff must be allowed to undertake their duties in safety + be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law. Gaza is no different." Source Dr. Munir Al-Barash, Director General of the Ministry of Health : The occupation is obstructing the entry of the convoy of medicines and polio vaccinations, which leads to the failure to start the vaccination campaign in northern Gaza. Source Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor : The occupation army’s arrest of a UN mission yesterday and interrogation of its members as they moved from the southern Gaza Strip to the north clearly demonstrates its intention to disrupt humanitarian and relief efforts. Cynical context of this humanitarian campaign Gazans feel like they are part of a "dark game," constantly moving to avoid bombings while still facing risks. Pauses for polio vaccination are set in specific areas, with both stationary and mobile points available for people to get the vaccine, but accessing them is very difficult. There is skepticism among medical staff about the success of the vaccination campaign, with some believing Israel is using it as a smokescreen to claim it allows humanitarian aid, while larger issues remain unaddressed. Humanitarian aid is barely reaching Gaza, with significantly diminished levels of assistance and a growing number of people in need. Aid organizations face numerous obstacles, such as not being allowed to move essential supplies (e.g., vegetables, hygiene kits) between different parts of Gaza despite severe shortages. Conditions in Gaza are described as inhumane, with people barely surviving. "Now, in the north of Gaza, there is no vegetables on the commercial market, but, ironically, hygiene kits are getting in to the north. What we are not permitted to do is move vegetables from the south to the north, where they’re needed, or hygiene kits from the north to the south. And this is just one sort of example of the various different hurdles and obstacles that are deliberately being placed (by Israel) in our way." Arwa Damon, an American journalist and humanitarian who covered the Middle East and other regions. Source More than 400 Palestinians were killed and at least 900 were wounded during the 12 days of the vaccination campaign, according to figures by Palestinian health authorities. End of the first round of vaccination (initial dose of the oral vaccine) Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s chief, says the first round of the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza reached 90 percent coverage.* “Our next challenge is to provide children with their second dose at the end of September”* Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X, renewing his call for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave. From the start of the ground invasion until Jabalia entered the current and ongoing aggression, the 401st Brigade has been heavily and fundamentally involved in heinous and bloody crimes, noting that the brigade commander, Ihsan Daqsa, fell into an ambush by the resistance in Jabalia. Under this tweet, I share some videos and begin to expose one of the most prominent propaganda of the Israeli occupation during this war: “evacuation leaflets.” In the clip below from Khan Yunis, we see that the evacuation leaflets were dropped on the targeted areas after the attacks were carried out, and not before them as is being promoted, which negates the claim that they aim to protect civilians or demand that they evacuate in advance. As a reminder, all the scenes were captured from a camera on the helmet of a soldier riding a tank, which means that there was no danger to the soldiers in all the previous scenes. IDF soldiers use a Palestinian civilian as a human shield in Shujjaia Neighborhood [Original post] Shocking documentation obtained by [@AJENews] originating from an Israeli drone showing the use of a Palestinian civilian as a human shield in Shujjaia Neighborhood, East Gaza city last December to search after militants, the man is being monitored by drones the whole time [Tags: Prisoner Abuse, Drone, Threat, Human Shield, Arrest, Unlawful detention, Dehumanization, Human Dignity] [Found by: Younis Tirawi, Al Jazeera] [Location: Gaza > Gaza City > Shujaiya] [Archivist Notes] Human Shields The use of civilians to protect combatants or military objectives from attack. This practice is explicitly prohibited under international humanitarian law (IHL) as per the Fourth Geneva Convention. Use of Human Shields in Israeli Military Practices Depending on whether the IDF is in Gaza or the West Bank, the methods used differ A. The “Mosquito Protocol” (2024) A term reportedly used by the IDF to describe the practice of sending Palestinian detainees into potentially dangerous situations to safeguard soldiers during military operations. Palestinian civilians are arrested, detained and allegedly used as “human shields” by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to search tunnels and inspect potentially booby-trapped locations during the Israeli ground invasion in Gaza. Civilians referred to as "shawishim," are sent into high-risk areas before IDF soldiers. These Operations are conducted in various parts of the Gaza Strip, including Rafah. IDF soldiers arrest Palestinian civilians, some as young as 16 and others elderly, are dressed in IDF uniforms, bound, and equipped with cameras to explore dangerous areas. Recent investigations and developments (2024) ~ July and February 2024: Reports emerged of Palestinians being coerced into entering booby-trapped buildings or tunnels in Gaza. ~ August 13, 2024 (Haaretz): Allegations from soldiers, commanders, and Palestinian detainees revealed that civilians, including minors, were used to inspect hazardous tunnels and buildings. Israeli leftist newspaper "Haaretz" Investigation IDF Allegedly Uses Palestinian Civilians as Human Shields in Gaza Operations by the Reporters: Yaniv Kubovich, Michael Hauser Tov on August 13, 2024. ~ October 21, 2024 (The Guardian): Whistleblower testimonies and reports highlighted systematic practices in Gaza, including tying civilians, forcing them to wear IDF uniforms, and using them for reconnaissance or shield tasks. ~ October 24, 2024 (CNN): The "Mosquito Protocol" involved forcing Palestinian detainees to enter danger zones. Reports included physical abuse and coercion, with some detainees subjected to beatings or threats. Key Practices and Allegations: ~ IDF soldiers abduct Palestinians included minors, elderly individuals, and detainees? in order to force them to: ~ Enter buildings and tunnels to check for explosives or in Gaza Strip, including Rafah, Khan Younis, Shuja’iya, and Jabaliya. ~ Perform reconnaissance and operate cameras. ~ Serve as shields during gunfire or door-knocking procedures. Soldiers and officers allegedly received orders to implement these tactics, with some expressing moral opposition. Civilians were often handcuffed, blindfolded, or dressed in IDF uniforms. IDF units use coercion involved physical abuse, threats, and psychological pressure. Some soldiers expressed moral opposition, describing the practice as mimicking tactics of organizations like Hamas. The Military Justifications is the safety of Soldiers (Commanders prioritized minimizing risks to Israeli troops, even at the expense of Palestinian civilians) and the Operational Efficiency (Familiarity with local areas made Palestinian civilians useful for identifying threats or navigating buildings). Evidence Supporting Allegations Palestinian detainees and IDF soldiers provided consistent accounts of coercion and abuse. Photographs and Video Footage showed bound civilians being guarded by IDF soldiers. Reports of civilians dressed in military gear with attached cameras for reconnaissance. Human Rights Documentation: Organizations like Breaking the Silence, Middle East Human Right Monitor, .. highlighted the systematic nature of these practices. The investigation includes first-hand soldier testimonies, video footage aired on Al Jazeera, and reports of systematic practices. Despite the IDF’s official denial, which states that such actions are against military regulations, these findings raise significant concerns about violations of humanitarian and legal standards. Soldier Concerns: Testimonies from DIF soldiers and commanders indicate ethical or legal discomfort with the practice, which some soldiers equate to endangering civilians for military advantage. They confronted their commanders about International laws but the answer was the following : "It is better that they explode and not the IDF soldiers" because their live is less important than IDF lives. In one reported case, a 16 y/O Palestinian was kept for several days, given combat rations, and used as humand shield by soldiers to explore a house. He was later released near a checkpoint confirming for the IDF whitnesses htat he was not involved in terrorism but just a civilian. Leadership Knowledge and Military Responses: Allegations that senior officials, including IDF Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi and Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, were aware of the practice. US Reaction: U.S. State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel expressed outrage, stating that the IDF’s actions in the footage “do not reflect IDF values” and are under investigation. B. Neighbor Procedure/Early Warning Procedure: A specific tactic used by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), primarily in the West Bank , where civilians (often neighbors) are asked to communicate with suspects or perform tasks such as clearing buildings. Israeli Military Justifications ~ The military argues that the practice reduces casualties on both sides by avoiding direct confrontations. ~ The IDF pretend civilians are not coerced and face little to no danger, as evidenced by the provision of protective measures like bulletproof vests. ~ Local civilians are believed to be better suited to communicate with suspects and navigate complex environments. ~ The presence of civilians supposedly reduces hostility from suspects, facilitating safer surrenders. Criticism and Legal Challenges The practice breaches the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits forcing protected persons to assist an occupying force. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit denies approving civilian use in dangerous military operations and claims the reported incidents are under review. The continuation of the practice after HCJ rulings indicates weak enforcement of judicial decisions within the military.Israel faces backlash for the practice, which undermines its international standing and raises questions about its adherence to IHL.Despite legal bans, reports of continued use highlight a lack of accountability within the IDF. Few soldiers are prosecuted, and penalties remain minimal. Disproportionate Risks & ethical concern: The procedure shifts the burden of danger from soldiers to civilians, violating the principle of proportionality under IHL.The procedure exposes civilians to potential harm, even when “voluntary,” and undermines the principle of distinction in IHL.Both victims and soldiers involved in these operations experience long-term trauma. The use of human shields continues to be condemned by international organizations like Btselem and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Documented Cases and Patterns Testimonies reveal that even minors and women were coerced or threatened into participating.Despite the 2005 HCJ ruling, instances of human shield usage have been reported in subsequent military operations. Case of Bilal (Testimony): A child was sent into a house to check for a suspect, showcasing the direct harm and coercion involved. Consequences Chronology of events Since October 2023 Gaza Israeli soldier Yosef Scewekeh from the steel cat combat engineering corps showing how they use Palestinian civilians as human shields in Gaza A video shows Israeli soldiers using a blindfolded Palestinian detainee as a human shield in the West Bank. He is seated on the ground w/ vehicles behind him using him as a shield as an Israeli soldier aim his rifle towards Palestinians May 2024: On May 24, Lt. Amit Nechmya, the Latak platoon commander is seen ordering an elderly man with a partially covered face to move to an unknown location in Rafah. The video was recorded by Sgt Camisa. On October 2024 “Really a nice ending”,This is what Mujinda wrote, commenting on the kidnapping of Palestinians in the West Bank. Before October 2023 Israeli soldiers forced Nidal, 9, Karam, 11, Ahmad, 2 & Mohammad, 2 to stand in front of Israeli military vehicles while Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters, stun grenades & live ammunition at Palestinians confronting the soldiers in Ramallah dci-palestine.org/israeli_forces… Israeli forces have used at least five Palestinian children as human shields in the first part of 2023, according to documentation collected by DCIP. March 2023: Anas al-Khalili from Nablus. “I was used as a human shield by Israeli forces. They handcuffed me & started shooting from behind me. While I was handcuffed, they pushed me down the stairs, they stayed behind me & were shooting at the men… 9 March 2018 Israel soldiers detained ‘Abd a-Rahim Gheith in Jericho & ordered him out the car, handcuffed him & made him sit on the road for 2hrs. Gheith was then used as a human shied, & was hit by stones thrown at the soldiers. Video evidence: 2014 (Operation Protective Edge): Documented cases of Palestinians being used as human shields despite the HCJ's ban. July-Aug 2014: “Israeli soldiers handcuffed & blindfolded us...they made us stand by the windows as protective shields for them. There was gunfire all around us. They made us stand by the window for 9 hours. We were their shields.” - Ramadan Qudeih July-August 2014: “They refused to let us out….I asked for am ambulance for my sister, who fainted, they refused. They held us to protect themselves. -Nazeeha al-Najjar (7:30) July-August 2014: "I was taken prisoner, handcuffed & walked almost at gun point…he made me walk forward and he was protected by me…if any shots had been fired, they’d have hit me. He [the israeli soldier] was right behind me. "The Committee on the Rights of the Child express deep concern about the continuous use of Palestinian children as human shields and informants. 14 such cases have been reported from January 2010 to 31 March 2013 only." The Goldstone Report documented many cases in which the Israeli military used Palestinians as human shields in the 2008-9 war on Gaza, including Majdi Abd Rabbo, Abbas Ahmad Ibrahim Halawa, Mahmoud Abd Rabbo al-Ajrami and others. See p. 218-230 documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/… February 2009: “the officers said I wouldn’t see my family unless i did it…he pushed me w/his weapon, held me by my neck & said go." -Magdy Rabbo. [He had to go back & forth between Israeli soldiers & hamas fighers]. The IDF used Magdy as a human shied. February 2009: “The Israelis would send us ahead...they made me dig holes in the wall & in the houses first to check in case they were booby trapped. We were put in front so in case there was gunfire, we would be [hit].” -Rabbi Abde Rabi, Gaza resident. 2008-2009 (Operation Cast Lead) & 2014 (Operation Protective Edge): Documented cases of Palestinians being used as human shields despite the HCJ's ban. The HCJ fully outlaws the use of civilians in military operations, ruling it as a violation of IHL. Despite this, incidents of the practice persist. November 2002: The HCJ temporarily bans the use of civilians as human shields but allows the procedure under specific conditions, such as explicit consent and minimal danger. , 2002: During the Second Intifada, the "Neighbor Procedure" results in the death of a Palestinian civilian, leading to petitions by human rights organizations to Israel’s High Court of Justice (HCJ). IDF forced Palestinians to walk through buildings suspected to be booby-trapped. it ordered them to enter certain areas before the combat forces...the army used residents as a “human shield” to serve as a shield against attack on those forces (p.230) documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/… the Israeli army took over Hussein Aladi’s home, established an Israeli military base on the roof. For 3 months, they fired every day from there. The army insisted family always remain in the house, to protect the Israeli soldiers in it. Start of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. The use of Palestinian civilians as human shields during military operations becomes an observed practice. A reminder that Keir Starmer has previously said he supports actions like this, which are war crimes. [Tags: Hospitals, Raid, Water, Border Police, Cutting electricity, Cutting fuel, Terror, Human Dignity, Healthcare System, Siege, Summary execution, Collaborators, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet)] [Found by: Saul Staniforth] [Location: West Bank > Jenin > Jenin Government Hospital] [Archivist Notes] Jenin Hospital has been under siege since January 22. On January 21, Israel killed at least 10 Palestinians and left more than 35 wounded in a large-scale operation ("Iron Wall") in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. “Iron Wall,” operation includes IDF troops, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) officers and Border Police, according to the Israeli military. Name of the victims Dr. Nader Irsheid, Dr. Khaled Zakarneh, Dr. Abdullah Al-Thaher, nurse Muhammad Amarneh, and nurse Ashraf Alauna were injured in different locations, near Jenin Governmental Hospital, Al-Amal Hospital, and Al-Razi Hospital. 1. Jenin Governmental Hospital: More than 600 displaced individuals sought refuge, with the hospital surrounded by military forces and cut off from food for an entire day. Despite attempts to coordinate food delivery, the Israeli military blocked it. Director Wissam Bakr reported that bulldozers made it difficult for medical teams to enter or exit the hospital. Bakr described the situation as tragic, fearing an assault or shooting by the Israeli army. During the night, Israeli forces bulldozed the road outside the Jenin Governmental Hospital, effectively blocking access to the hospital for ambulances. On the morning of January 22, a Roya journalist reported that Israeli forces requested Palestinians evacuate the Jenin Government Hospital and gave patients eight hours to leave. They ordered citizens to walk on foot through a security corridor to the Al-Awda Roundabout, where everyone would be thoroughly inspected. They evicted the Jenin Governmental Hospital. The patients were seen walking on foot, using the bulldozed street before the deadline passed. According to Medical Aid for Palestine (MAP), medics claimed that "minimal staff are inside and they are not allowed to leave." "No supplies, not even basic items like bread, are permitted to enter. Meanwhile, the rest of the hospital staff outside are being prevented from reaching the facility." At the end of the morning, a group of Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces in front of the entrance. The loud noise of military vehicles and bulldozers, combined with threats over loudspeakers, made the residents fear the hospital could face the same fate as those destroyed by Israeli forces in Gaza. 2. Al-Amal Hospital: The siege was more violent, with soldiers firing indiscriminately into the courtyard, wounding at least three doctors and two hospital workers. The situation was chaotic, with gunfire heard throughout the hospital grounds. A nurse was shot behind the hospital and left bleeding until rescued by a paramedic. The hospital remains under strict siege, with only one ambulance allowed in or out, constantly inspected. Food delivery is only possible through this ambulance, with its staff under constant threat. 3. Al-Razi Hospital & Palestinian Authorities Collaboration Coinciding with the Israeli occupation's aggression, the PA's security forces, affiliated with the Fatah movement (PLO), arrested a wounded young man after besieging and storming the Al-Razi Hospital in Jenin. They also shot a young man in the head. The Director of Al-Razi Hospital in Jenin to Al Jazeera: There are two serious injuries by occupation bullets after clashes in front of the hospital. Security forces affiliated with the Authority stormed the patients' section of the hospital after gunfire. PA security forces stormed the hospital, arresting a wounded man believed to be a member of the Jenin Battalion and wanted by the Israeli army. This marked the first time Palestinian forces publicly participated in an Israeli military assault in the West Bank. Context : Israeli occupation forces have intensified their deadly raid in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, destroying infrastructure, displacing around 2,000 families, and forcing the evacuation of the public hospital under direct threat. January 23: evacuation of Jenin Hospitals continues lsraeli forces continue to evict Palestinians from the vicinity of Jenin Camp, including patients in Jenin Governmental Hospital. Janurary 24 : The infrastructure destruction around the Jenin Governement Hospital continues. The roads and the building are so deeply destructuct that the ambulances cannot reach the entrance of the hospital. On January 25: Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations : “Reports indicate that Jenin Governmental Hospital is still without water & electricity, due to the Israeli aggression.” “Reports indicate difficulty in reaching Jenin Governmental Hospital due to damaged roads.” On January 26: Israeli occupation forces also continue to block access to the Jenin Government Hospital, hindering the entry and exit of civilians. On January 28-29: The occupation forces continue to obstruct the work of ambulance crews in the city of Jenin, as they detained ambulances during the night in the industrial zone, the Post Street area, and the main roundabout. They also tighten their entry and exit to the Jenin Governmental Hospital, and check the identities of paramedics. A woman and her son, attempting to reach Jenin Government Hospital, were forced to leave their car, searched, and prevented from reaching the hospital. The woman fainted. This incident is an indication of the consequences faced by the people of Jenin due to health access obstruction. Statement of UN human rights office Thameen al-Kheetan, of the UN human rights office, called Israeli tactics in Jenin “deadly operations”, after Israel targeted a refugee camp in the centre of the city and besieged a nearby hospital : “We are deeply concerned by the use of unlawful lethal force in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank,” he said on Friday, criticising “methods and means developed for war fighting, in violation of human rights law … this includes multiple airstrikes and apparently random shooting at unarmed residents attempting to flee or find safety.”

This will have long-lasting effects on Gaza's 90,000 students and the region's educational future. Below are the universities affected: 1. Islamic University of Gaza Founded in 1978, over 17,000 students as of 2023 Destruction : Destroyed on 10 October ; accused by Israel of producing weapons without any evidence. Previously hit in 2008-2009 and 2014. Major Asaf Fred, who was later in Rafah & a commander in IDF’s 460 Brigade, admits to the destruction of IUG university in Gaza, a court & Rimal neighborhood without any military objectives . He also called for the destruction of Amalekite cities + “‘no good arabs” On December 19 he posts a long Genocidal justification. Excerpt : “Yes, this is how you destroy an enemy: Not only by killing its soldiers but also by destroying its symbols…..The destruction of the enemy's national symbols is a clear declaration that the games are over, and we want to win." On March 1, he shares a satellite imagery of Younis: “Amazing! This is how it should be done to all the Amalekite cities. (Khan Yunis, during the IDF maneuver)” In November 5, 2024, some remaining buildings of this University were used as military base by Israeli troops. "My alma mater @IUGAZA med school is now a military point in the middle of Gaza. This IOF soldier is bragging about intentionally causing a delay in the start of the academic year because of occupying it and destroying its teaching hospital!" writes on X @OsaidesserMD Palestinian Academic global surgeon 2.Al-Azhar University Founded in 1991 during the First Intifada, 17,000 students and 12 faculties at its peak. Destruction: Bombed by aistrikes on 6 November , heavily damaging the campus. And blowed up on December 7. "On Shabbat, we loaded the mines, and I signed off on the shipment with a modification due to the sanctity of Shabbat,” First Master Sergeant David Zoldan, the operational officer of Company A of Israel’s 749 Battalion wrote in a Facebook post on December 20. “A few days later, we assembled them and booby-trapped one of Gaza’s symbols of the future—Al-Azhar University in the northern part of the strip—and blew it up.” December 2023: Company A of the 749 Battalion was tasked with rigging up the south Gaza City campus of Al-Azhar University with explosives and detonating them, reducing Gaza’s second-largest university to rubble. On the footage, we can heard soldiers said "Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined” when they watch the powerful explosion. The mining and detonation of the University was released on his Social netework by the IDF soldiers of the 749 Combat Engineering Corps invluding : David Zolden, Operational Officer Arthur Davidov Rafael Ben Ishay Maya Radoszkowicz Arik Tedler Amit Yagodeev Saar Hirshoren Natvie Korkus Yossi Nahari Roman Dyachenko Daniel Bedoya Yehuda Efraim Nathan Emergui Eli Biton Amit Viner Rony Ifrach Omri Felous Royi Wickes Netanel Levine Yahav Hoffmann Yahav Abr Dor Osher Adib In the following picture, Liad Ohayon, of Moroccan origin, serving in the Givati Brigade's Shaked Battalion celebrated the completion of their military service on the Al-Azhar University campus, which had been used as a military base and was subsequently detonated upon their withdrawal. Occupation : Turned into military barracks Destruction : bombed on 15 November 3. Al-Israa University Founded in 2014 (Gaza's youngest university) Occupation : Its main building was occupied for 70 days by Israeli soldiers and Destruction 17 January 2024 by a massive Blowing up (355 explosives) During a press conference on Thursday, a U.S. State Department Spokesperson was asked if Israa University was a legitimate target. To this, spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “I don’t have independent information to verify that. But I can say that we continue to urge Israel to avoid damage to critical infrastructure – that would, of course, include universities – and to ensure the protection of humanitarian and medical sites.” According to Itai Blumenthal (2024, 08:14 on March 11), it seems that the Brigadier General Hiram authorized the demolition of the Al Asraa University building in the south of Gaza City on the grounds that tunnels were dug under the building where terrorists were hiding. Since it is a sensitive building, Brigadier General Hiram was supposed to get permission in advance from the commander of the Southern Command. Two months later, the commander of the Southern Command recorded the "note" to the commander of Division 99 with the approval of Chief of Staff Halevi. 4. Palestine Technical College Founded in 1993 in Deir el-Balah, 1,800 students Now a shelter for displaced Palestinians. 5. "In a moment of great darkness, your protests erupt and give hope for humanity that justice is not an abstract concept but a continuous struggle that connects us all. Your values are emancipating the university from structural racism and complicity with power and colonialism. The situation in Palestine has reached increased genocidal levels, marked by the mass targeting of Palestinian life by killing and displacement; the destroying of social, cultural, and all educational institutions; and the aim to reduce Palestinians to bare life with no political and collective future. You are leaders in the call for justice with your bodies on your university campuses and in the streets, speaking truth and justice loud and clear. You stand for the courage that is needed to take action strongly for justice and freedom and determinedly against systems of genocide and racism. We know the risks you are taking in face of the repressive measures that are taken against university spaces built on challenging the powers benefitting from silence. At a time when the voices of the oppressed are intentionally silenced, your solidarity serves as a beacon of hope. Your actions are a resounding message that injustice and oppression will not be tolerated. We draw inspiration from the courage of those who refuse and resist the continuing injustices of settler colonialism and military occupation. We welcome you at our universities in a liberated Palestine. She recently carried the Olympic torch in Paris to pay tribute to slain colleagues and highlight "the atrocities that have been happening in this region. [Tags: Dedication, Wounded, Journalism, Freedom of expression, Double tap] [Found by: Democracy Now] [Location: Lebanon > South Lebanon] [Archivist Notes] On October 13 , 2023, Israeli army strikes on a group of 7 journalists in south Lebanon, which killed Reuters journalist Issam Abdullah & injured 6 others. This appears beeing a direct attack on civilians that must be investigated as a war crime. Chronology of Events Before the Attack Around 5:00 PM, a group of seven journalists gathered near the village of Alma al-Chaab, Tyre governorate, in southern Lebanon. They were reporting on hostilities near the Lebanese-Israeli border, filming ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Hizbullah. The group included journalists from Reuters, AFP, and Al Jazeera. Surveillance by Israeli Forces (5:00–6:00 PM): Israeli surveillance assets, including an Apache helicopter and possibly a drone, circled above the area for over 40 minutes before the attack. The group was stationary, giving Israeli forces ample time to identify them as civilians and journalists. First Strike (6:02 PM): An Israeli tank fired a 120mm round (likely an M339 projectile) from positions near Jordeikh in Israel. Issam Abdallah (Reuters) was killed instantly while sitting on a stone ledge. Christina Assi (AFP) suffered severe injuries, losing her leg. Second Strike (6:03 PM): A second projectile, 37 seconds later, likely a guided missile, struck near the journalists, hitting the Al Jazeera car, which caught fire. The explosion caused additional injuries, including to Dylan Collins (AFP) wounded by shrapnel, Carmen Joukhadar (Al Jazeera) suffering of severe shrapnel injuries, Elie Brakhya (Al Jazeera) suffering of a crushed shoulder and severe arm injuries, Maher Nazeh and Thaier Al-Sudani (Reuters) suffering of shrapnel injuries. Aftermath Survivors scrambled to assist each other amid the chaos. Verified videos showed injured journalists and the burning Al Jazeera car. Victims and Impact: Killed: Issam Abdallah (Reuters) Injured: Christina Assi (AFP): Lost one leg. Dylan Collins (AFP): Shrapnel wounds. Maher Nazeh (Reuters): Shrapnel injuries. Thaier Al-Sudani (Reuters): Injuries on the left side of the body. Carmen Joukhadar (Al Jazeera): Shrapnel wounds. Elie Brakhya (Al Jazeera): Severe arm injuries and shoulder damage. Weapons used by Israli Army : The weapons used in the attack on the journalists in south Lebanon on October 13, 2023, were analyzed by Amnesty International: 120mm Tank Round: The first strike, which killed Issam Abdallah and severely injured Christina Assi, was identified as a 120mm tank round, most likely an M339 projectile, fired from Israeli positions near the villages of Al-Nawaqir and Jordeikh. This type of weapon was manufactured by the Israeli company IMI Systems. An AFP investigation conducted with Airwars, showed that the first strike involved a 120-milimeter tank shell only used by the Israeli army in this region. Amnesty and Human Rights Watch also concluded that the first strike that killed Abdallah and severely wounded Assi was most likely a tank round fired from Israel. Small Guided Missile: The second strike, which occurred 37 seconds after the first, hit near an Al Jazeera vehicle, causing it to catch fire. This weapon was likely a small guided missile, though the exact model and launch platform could not be identified. Amnesty International Lab investigation shows : Amnesty International’s investigation included over 100 verified videos, photos, witness interviews, and forensic analysis. The journalists were clearly identifiable as civilians, wearing press vests and positioned in an open, visible location. Journalists wore helmets and flak vests marked “press”. Vehicles were visibly marked, with one car labeled “TV”. The location was an open hill with clear visibility, devoid of any military presence. An Israeli Apache helicopter and drone surveilled the area for over 40 minutes before the strikes. Two strikes occurred 37 seconds apart, the first involving a 120mm tank round, likely an M339 projectile, and the second a small guided missile. No evidence of military objectives or fighters was found in the journalists' vicinity. Other investigations For its investigation, Reuters worked with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), an independent research institute which works with the Dutch defense ministry. The probe pointed to "the tail fin of a 120 mm tank round fired by a smoothbore tank gun positioned 1.34 km away from the reporters, across the Lebanese border." It analyzed evidence from the scene, satellite images and hours of footage, including footage from Italian broadcaster Rai "that showed the launch point of the second strike as well as the tank round in flight, and the audio of the firing and the impact of both rounds taken from Al Jazeera's live feed." "Using the Al Jazeera audio, TNO calculated the interval between the sound of the two strikes and the thud of the muzzle blasts to determine that the firing point was 1,343 metres away from the reporters, (..) It said the sound signatures from the strikes matched, showing they were both tank rounds fired from the same position." It determined they originated from an Israeli military outpost in Jordeikh next to the border. Reuter statement after investigation (Dec 2023) According to Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni, "The evidence we now have, and have published today, shows that an Israeli tank crew killed our colleague Issam Abdallah," (...) "We call on Israel to explain how this could have happened and to hold to account those responsible for his death and the wounding of Christina Assi of the AFP, our colleagues Thaier al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, and the three other reporters," IDF Statements and Denial: Israeli UN Envoy Gilad Erdan stated: “We would never want to hit or kill any journalist... but you know, we’re in a state of war.” The Israeli military announced the incident was “under review.”. One years later, this war crime stays unpunished and no investigation result was communicated to the victims. Sources :

The “Mosquito Protocol” (2024) A term reportedly used by the IDF to describe the practice of sending Palestinian detainees into potentially dangerous situations to safeguard soldiers during military operations. Palestinian civilians are arrested, detained and allegedly used as “human shields” by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to search tunnels and inspect potentially booby-trapped locations during the Israeli ground invasion in Gaza. Murder of Shatha Sabbagh by Palestinian Authorities : testimony of relative [Original post] ⚡️ Follow-up by Suhaib Marai, the husband of the martyr Shaza Sabbagh's sister, narrating how the authorities' apparatus assassinated journalist Shaza Sabbagh in front of her house, with children and women around her: ◼️ What happened was a cold-blooded liquidation of young children, women and the elderly, without any mercy, and what happened cannot be ignored ◼️These people have turned into militias similar to Assad's thugs, and it has become like liquidations and militia practices. These people come to liquidate us in cold blood, and what is happening is not sedition. ◼️ Shaza was standing in front of our house, located opposite the house of the martyr Yazid Jaayseh, 20 meters away from the military watchtower, and she was carrying two young children. ◼️ Behind her, my sister and some women were clearly visible, and the street was fully lit, as the street lights were on, and the whole area was completely clear, as if it was being shown in HD quality. ◼️The authorities' personnel were standing close to her, and despite that, one of them opened fire on them automatically and deliberately and without any reason. There was no shooting in the area, and there were no young men present at that moment; the area is completely under the authority. ◼️The soldier started shooting directly at them, and my sister was shouting at him, saying: "Stop, we've been hit, stop shooting!" But he continued shooting without stopping, targeting the door of the house directly, face to face. He hit everyone as if he was planning to eliminate them. ◼️My sister was trying to drag the young children by their heads and feet as they lay on the ground, while the soldier continued to shoot. ◼️After that, the neighbors gathered, and the women started screaming and crying, trying to open the way to pull out the injured woman, who was covered in blood as a result of a head injury. [Tags: Small Arms, Journalism, Freedom of expression, Summary execution, Collaborators] [Found by: NanceAbdallah] [Location: West Bank > Jenin] [Archivist Notes] Since December 1, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has besieged the Jenin Camp and in this neigborhood. And since December 14, PA has been carrying out a violent raid. The stated aim of Operation “Protecting the Homeland” is to “restore order and end security chaos,” but the campaign is directed solely against resistance fighters using tactics similar to those of Israeli forces. The PA is transforming into a repressive force. For 3 weeks, the Jenin refugee camp has been under total siege, accompanied by a harsh crackdown on dissent : Disturbingly, security forces are documenting their crimes and sharing the videos publicly. Here’s what you need to know.. They operate as an extension of the Israeli occupying force. On December 5, Palestinian security forces launched an assault on the Jenin refugee camp. The operation involved special police units, the presidential guard, intelligence operatives, and various other security divisions. Snipers have positioned themselves on high buildings around the camp, including the security forces’ headquarters and the hospital. Armed government units occupy the fourth floor of Jenin Hospital, firing indiscriminately at the people and homes within the camp. Security forces are stationed at the hospital entrance and inside its emergency unit, where they compel individuals to unlock their phones. Those who refuse face beatings and arrests, while anyone found with “suspicious” content—often criticism of the operation—is severely beaten and detained. Protests against these actions are met with tear gas and bullets. Security forces label civilians as agents of Iran, ISIS members, or terrorists, regardless of age. These accusations, bizarrely inconsistent, are accompanied by threats of harsh punishment and the use of overwhelming force. Posting on social media from anywhere in Palestine—be it Hebron, Ramallah, or Jenin—now risks a sudden arrest by the Palestinian intelligence unit. In recent days, numerous individuals, including journalists, have been detained for speaking out. On 14 December, Palestinian forces shot and killed at least one Palestinian in Jenin refugee camp. A 15-year-old boy was also shot and killed, and the perpetrator has yet to be confirmed. Since 5 December, Palestinian forces have carried out search and arrest operations and have exchanged fire with Palestinians in Jenin city and refugee camp, killing several Palestinians. Following this incident the UN Human Rights Office reiterated its call on the Palestinian authorities “to launch an effective, transparent, and impartial investigation into each killing that raises concerns about serious violations of international human rights law, and to ensure accountability.” On 1st January 2025, the Palestinian Authority suspends Al-Jazeera’s operations in the West Bank , decides to temporarily shut down its office. The reason is because Al-Jazeera’s coverage are critical of the PA’s crackdown on armed groups in Jenin (to appease Trump) & idleness on Gaza. In a statement, Al-Jazeera accused the PA of carrying out an "ongoing campaign of incitement and intimidation" against its journalists and called on authorities to protect their safety : online accounts linked to the PA's security apparatus and Fatah have reportedly threatened the network’s reporters in recent days."Al-Jazeera calls on the PA to immediately retract and cancel the decision … and to allow it and its teams to cover freely from the West Bank without any threats or intimidation," it said. On 1st January 2025, the Palestinian Authority security forces have arrested Dr.Qasem Bani Ghara,Head of the Emergency Department, while he was working at Jenin Governmental Hospital Martyrs names (confirmed) Rebhi al-Shalabi, 19 (December 10) Muhammad al-Amer, 13 (December 14) Yazid Ja’ayseh, commander of the Jenin Brigades Majd Zaidan, 17 (December 23) Shatha Al Sabbagh, 21, student in Journalism (December 28) Mohammed Abu Libeh (December 29) Irtiqaa Mahmoud Al-Haj Al-Jalqamousi (January 3) Qassem Mahmoud al-Haj, 14, his son (January 3) Testimony from the father of the child Muhammad Al-Amer from Jenin camp "When my son Muhammad was executed, my other son Louay, a helpless man on crutches injured for a year, and his entire foot is plated,” tried to help his martyred brother Muhammad, but was shot by a PA sniper and is now lying in Ibn Sina Hospital." According to The Cradle, Yazid Ja’ayseh, was the commander of the Jenin Brigades, who had evaded Israeli assassination attempts for his leadership role in unifying all Palestinian Resistance fighters under the umbrella of a single group. Why Palestinian authorities is transforming into a repressive force ? Israel carried out over 80 operations in the past year alone to suppress resistance to its illegal occupation in Jenin. These have resulted in more than 220 killings and thousands of injuries, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, but this resistance is still alive. “Operation Summer Camps,” launched by the Israeli military on August 28, 2024, targeting armed groups in the northern West Bank, including Jenin. The operation lasted 11 days, during which the IDF reported the deaths of 14 Resistance fighters, and 22 civilians, including 21 in Jenin, with eight children and two elderly individuals among the casualties. This operation created unprecedented destruction, estimating infrastructure damage at $13 million—surpassing. So, Israel has expressed approval of the PA’s crackdown, hoping it will more effectively suppress resistance. Many Palestinians view the PA’s actions as aiding the apartheid state by targeting anti-occupation fighters, thus enabling the Israeli military to focus resources on Gaza. On December 22, Israel’s Channel 14 reported that Israel warned Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that the “deadline” for the ongoing operation in Jenin camp is approaching. The message reportedly stated, “You have a short period to finish the operation in Jenin, and then we will resume operations in the northern West Bank.” According to Mondoweiss, some expert analyses indicates tahtt the PA acted after fears that Palestinian militants would draw inspiration from the collapse of the Syrian regime, and try to topple the PA. According to AL Jazeera, "the PA may also be attempting to present itself as a security partner to the incoming United States president, Donald Trump, particularly in light of Israeli attempts to weaken it" and according to Omar Rahman, an expert on Israel-Palestine with the Middle East Council on Global Affairs “Over the past few years, the PA has lost control over the West Bank, and I imagine it is trying to claw back control to prove its worth to its handlers – Israel and the United States”. Consequences on living conditions According to UNOCHA "The fighting between Palestinian forces and armed Palestinians has disrupted the safe access to essential services for Palestinians, including education, water and health. On multiple occasions, about 33 Palestinian-run schools were forced to shut and shift studies to remote learning. On 15 December, UNRWA announced that the fighting had caused it to halt its services for another day in Jenin refugee camp. Several generators were hit during exchanges of fire, causing intermittent electricity and communication outages in multiple neighbourhoods within the camp. The ongoing fighting has halted the rehabilitation of water networks, which were significantly damaged by previous Israeli military operations, affecting access to water for over 60 per cent of the camp's population (about 12,000 people). The internal unrest has reportedly expanded to other locations in the northern West Bank, including in Tulkarm and near Balata refugee camp in Nablus". The murder of journalist Shatha Al Sabbagh On December 28, at around 11 PM , journalist Shatha Al-Sabbagh was fatally shot in the head by a gunman in Jenin while she was on the street with a child near her home. Multiple eyewitnesses reported that she was shot at close range by a gunman who fired several times until she fell to the ground. The shooter was identified by witnesses as a member of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces. Initially injured, Shatha was pronounced dead at approximately 11:25 PM at Jenin Governmental Hospital. Conflicting accounts of the incident have since emerged. While her brother and her mother alleged that the PA was responsible, citing the area being under their full control, someone in the resistance groups claimed the shooter was a member of the Jenin Battalion who mistook her for a PA agent targeting him. This version is contradicted by key facts: Shatha was wearing civilian clothes, was accompanied by a child, and was shot multiple times at close range. These details cast doubt on the claim of mistaken identity and point to deliberate intent. On December 30, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate demanding an investigation into the killing of 21-year-old Palestinian journalism student Shatha Sabbagh. “The union demands the formation of an independent investigation committee with the participation of a representative of the union to determine the truth, hold the killers accountable, and prevent them from escaping punishment,” According to Journalist, Nida Ibrahim, "Shatha Sabbagh was a 21-year-old Palestinian journalism student, but she’d been very active lately inside the Jenin refugee camp with her media work, trying to portray the picture to the international and Arab media. She was a very important source of information from within the camp itself. Now she has been shot dead and the family is accusing the Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces, saying there is no way that the bullet could have come from any side but the PA’s snipers. The PA security spokesperson says they were not in the area where Shaza was shot. The family has taken her body for autopsy, and they say that depending on the results, they will file a lawsuit against the Palestinian Authority". On 1st January 2025, the Palestinian Authority suspends Al-Jazeera’s operations in the West Bank, decides to temporarily shut down its office.
