Beneath the ruins, up to 10,000 bodies remain buried. With Israel blocking the entry of excavators and heavy machinery, Palestinian civil defense teams have been forced to dig with shovels, pickaxes, and their bare hands. The Ministry of Health says 472 bodies have been recovered since the October ceasefire began, while 195 bodies returned by Israel bore signs of abuse, some bound, blindfolded, or shot. Experts warn the recovery could take up to nine months if machinery were allowed in. Yet, families continue to queue daily at hospitals, desperate for news of their missing relatives. The lack of DNA testing equipment, which Israel also bans from entering Gaza, makes identification nearly impossible.
